Promoting Your DJ Profile

with 2 comments

Ryan Oliver, one of the team behind Metalheadz.co.uk, takes us through the essential steps in promoting your DJ profile online.

1) Eat, Breathe & Sleep Music

It might seem obvious, but the most critical element of any DJ’s success is their ability to play the music that will move people in the area they operate in. To achieve this, you will need to constantly be searching for the next big sound / label / artist / tune that will give your DJ sets an edge over everyone else’s.

The importance of using the internet to search for new music cannot be underestimated & music blogs and sites such as SoundCloud mean that it is easier than ever to hear tonnes of new music on a daily basis.

  1. I absolutely agree that networking & supporting the community are so vital- it’s how you develop the contacts needed to expand your opportunities. Constantly having fresh music is certainly vital, but I think increasingly success as a DJ comes from producing and being involved in the production community- thus giving reciprocal access to dubplates, as well as being a “name” and thus likely to get booked.

    • Thanks for your comment Gareth – I’m with you 100% on the importance of honing productions skills to further a DJ career…..As well as raising your profile within the industry & improving your chances of getting access to more tracks to play, producing can give you an innate understanding of musical theory, which can elevate a DJ’s skills massively.

This is something that occurred to me when this post was being written, but there are so many factors within this to write about that it seemed to be an article in itself! Watch this space – Ryan
